Moviegoers react after stabbing outside ‘Minecraft movie’ in Warwick
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A late-night fight in the parking lot of the Apple Cinemas in Warwick turned ugly quickly, ending with two people stabbed.
Moviegoers say they are shocked by what happened
“This is disturbing,” Kelly Smith of Providence said. “This is the last thing I expected to hear.”
Warwick police responded to reports of a fight in the parking lot of the theater just before midnight on April 15.
“There was a scuffle out here, I didn’t know for sure what it was,” Marilyn Wade of Warwick said. “A whole bunch of people were gathering around each other and it didn’t seem like a happy scene.”
Wade lives in the neighboring apartment complex and said she saw the fight.
“This is a very nice neighborhood, and I go to this mall and movie theater and I know a lot of the people there,” she said.
Police say the four teenagers who were arrested were told to quiet down during the Minecraft movie, then they followed three adults into the parking lot where they assaulted them and slashed two of them with knives.
The movie had sparked a viral social media trend where moviegoers throw popcorn and yell during a scene when actor Jack Black “chicken jockey.”
It was not known if that’s what happened before the assault.
The four who were arrested will go through the family court system and were not identified because of their age.
Police added that the two people who were stabbed were expected to recover.
