Newport reverts to earlier starts for high school students

Posted: Updated:

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island school district will revert to its old start and dismissal times after two years of later school days for high school students.

The Newport Daily News reports the Newport School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to shift the high school's schedule back by 45 minutes.

The high school had switched to an 8:15 a.m. start in light of studies that say teenagers perform better when they start school later. The elementary and middle school schedules were also adjusted to accommodate buses. They will revert to their original times as well.

Some parents complained that the elementary school's 9 a.m. start time was too late for working parents. The high school's later time also caused issues for students from nearby districts who came to Newport for technical programs.
