Bad Robot’s ‘Overlord’ gets release date, but will it be a ‘Cloverfield’ spinoff?

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production studio has already churned out two chapters in its “Cloverfield universe” — 2008’s Cloverfield and last year’s 10 Cloverfield Lane. Now, with a rumored third installment on the way later this year, a potential fourth film is scheduled to hit theaters in October 2018.

Paramount Pictures announced the official release date this week for Overlord, the next film on the schedule for Bad Robot after this year’s God Particle. Directed by Son of a Gun filmmaker Julius Avery, Overlord will hit theaters October 26, 2018.

As with previous Bad Robot films, the studio has provided a brief synopsis of the film and cast list, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the Cloverfield studio’s projects, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Based on an original concept from Abrams and The Hunger Games screenwriter Billy Ray, Overlord is set in 1944, on the eve of the “D-Day” invasion of Normandy, France, which gave the Allied forces a foothold in Western Europe during World War II. The film is said to follow a group of American paratroopers who are dropped behind enemy lines on a vital mission, only to discover that there’s more than just a military operation underway at the Nazi-occupied village they’re targeting.

While it’s easy to speculate on how the title could relate to the film’s synopsis, it’s worth noting that the title has actual roots in the historic military operation that paved the way for an Allied victory in World War II. The official code name for the Battle of Normandy was “Operation Overlord.”

The cast of Overlord so far includes Jovan Adepo (The Leftovers), Wyatt Russell (Everybody Wants Some), Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones), Dominic Applewhite (The King’s Speech), Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones), Iain de Caestecker (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), John Magaro (The Big Short), Mathilde Ollivier (The Misfortunes of Francois Jane), and Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo).

The film’s script was penned by Ray and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant).

While nothing is confirmed regarding a connection between the upcoming God Particle and the two aforementioned Cloverfield movies, a December 2016 scheduling change by Paramount Pictures hinted that the film would be the third installment of Bad Robot’s cinematic universe. With the studio scheduling Overlord exactly a year later, there’s reason to believe the next two films from Bad Robot could make the story that started with Cloverfield a lot more expansive in the near future.
